BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports (two years)

OVERVIEW

Esports is an industry rapidly on the rise. Global Esports revenues are tipped to hit $1.8 billion by 2022, with more than 450 million viewers tuning in last year. As part of a balanced lifestyle, it is also a beneficial alternative to passive media like TV and supports building a wide array of technical and personal skills.

Esports has strong connections to computing education, STEAM subjects and developing business and enterprise skills, cyber skills and digital literacy. Endorsed by the British Esports Association for learners wanting to work in the industry, this Level 3 course builds upon a wealth of transferable skills and enables you to experience different aspects of Esports, covering a range of subjects from video production and branding to games design and computer networking.

Esports isn't just about playing games; this exciting new career pathway will give you the skills and opportunities you need to start a career in video games, tech or other related sectors, such as enterprise and entrepreneurship, strategy and analysis, events management, live-streamed broadcasting, video production, shoutcasting, coaching, health and wellbeing, the law and legislation, computer networking, and more!

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Learners wishing to study this qualification should have already achieved either;

- A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 and above. Preferably including English and/or maths.

- A Level 2 qualification in a related subject – Esports, Creative Digital Media, Information Technology

CONTENT | UNITS

This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement enabling learners to develop underpinning knowledge and technical and transferable skills that gain experience in a variety of different sections of the esports industry.

Learners taking this qualification will study five mandatory units:

- Introduction to Esports

- Esports Skills, Strategies and Analysis

- Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in the - Esports Industry

- Health, Wellbeing and Fitness for Esports Players

- Esports Events

The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills across the different unit areas, supported by underpinning knowledge.

Learners will also be able to choose 10 optional units. The optional units are intended to give breadth of choice for learners to gain depth in a range of units across the esports areas of employment, such as

- Sport, media, IT and business enterprise such as;

- Live-streamed broadcasting

- Shoutcasting

- Video production

- Business applications of esports in social media

- Launching your esports enterprise

- Psychology for esports performance

ASSESSMENT

On an esports course, you’ll be completing written tasks, as well as completing practical assignments such as presenting, coaching, live streaming, events management, designing an esports brand, and more.

Coursework is set continually throughout the year, so you will know how you are progressing at all times. There are also two external examinations

PROGRESSION

On successful completion of your BTEC Esports course, you will gain a recognised qualification that will enable you to progress to employment in the industry, possibly via an apprenticeship. The sorts of role which could be available include;

- Esports player

- Team coach

- Events organiser

- Shoutcaster and Presenter

- Video production editor

- Data Analyst.

You could also move into higher education with potential pathways ranging from a BA (Hons) in Events Management, BA (Hons) in Media, or a BA (Hons) in Esports as well as accessing Higher Nationals directly from your qualification.
