BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development (two years)

OVERVIEW

This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement and accreditation. It enables learners to develop underpinning knowledge and technical skills and to gain experience as an assistant coach. It is endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and is therefore recognised by employers as enabling learners to enter employment in the job role of assistant coach in the sports sector.

This course is in a professional vocational sports setting based at Tranmere Rovers Football Club and the Solar Campus. You will develop skills, knowledge and understanding of sports and apply your learning in a practical and realistic way.

Football participation will include both football sessions and practical gym training, taking place throughout the duration of the course.

There will be daily football training by Tranmere Rovers FC and UEFA qualified coaches in addition to competitive matches played in:

- EFL CEFA League

- National Youth Football Leagues

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need to have achieved one of the following:

- A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 and above. Preferably including English and/or maths

- A Level 2 qualification (e.g. BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate)

- A GCSE in PE/Sports Studies would be advantageous and you will need to be able to demonstrate a reasonable degree of fitness

CONTENT | UNITS

During this course you will study a total of 12 units. Seven core/mandatory units will provide a general foundation and 5 optional units allow the qualification to be specifically tailored to suit progression and destination outcomes.

More specialist optional units may include;

- Practical sport application

- Sports psychology

- Nutrition for physical performance

- School sport delivery

ASSESSMENT

Al BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma units are assessed through project and assignment work. There are no external examinations.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assesed through external examination and portfolio work.

PROGRESSION

On sucessful completion of this course you may wish to;

- Apply to study a variety of Higher Education courses such as a Level 5 HND Sport, BA (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Development, BSc (Hons) in Football Development and Performance, BA (Hons) in Sports Management or BA (Hons) in Physical Education

- Apprenticeships such as Community activator coach apprenticeship or Sporting excellence professional apprenticeship

- Employment as an Assistant Coach. An example could include assisting to coach a range of multi-skills sports activities, or supporting sports development community-based projects to increase participation in sport and physical activity.
